It is the mission of the Berrien County Government to provide leadership, cooperation with all units of government, and sound fiscal management and planning, thereby promoting public safety, health, well being, and prosperity in order to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.
Their board meetings are held every Thursday (excluding holidays, night meetings and the 5th Thursday). With the exception of night meetings, the regular location for their meetings is at the Berrien County Administration Center, 701 Main St., St. Joseph, Michigan. Their typical meeting day looks like this:
8:30 a.m. - Committee of the Whole - The intent of this meeting is to allow a forum for information to be provided by the County Administrator. Issues will be discussed but no action will be taken other than approval of the prior meeting minutes.
9:15 a.m. - The Administration, Finance, and Personnel & Human Services meetings are held. The Board of Commissioners oversees the County’s business via committees, thus the commissioners are divided up among the three committees.
Each department within the county government has a "parent" committee that the department head reports to for personnel changes, budget issues, and various other departmental issues.
The Committee assignments are as follows:
Administration - Animal Control, Courts, Building & Maintenance, Road Commission, Sheriff’s Dept., Prosecutor’s Office, Motorpool, 9-1-1, Juvenile Center, and Western Michigan Legal Services.
