It is the mission of the Berrien County Government to provide leadership, cooperation with all units of government, and sound fiscal management and planning, thereby promoting public safety, health, well being, and prosperity in order to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.

The Board of Commissioners oversees the County’s business via committees, thus the commissioners are divided up among the three committees; Administration, Finance, and Personnel & Human Services. The committees meet every Thursday (excluding holidays and night meetings) at 8:30 a.m. at the Berrien County Administration Center, 701 Main St., St. Joseph, Michigan.
Each department within the county government has a "parent" committee that the department head reports to for personnel changes, budget issues, and various other departmental issues.
The Committee assignments are as follows:
Administration - Law Enforcement, Animal Control, Courts, Building & Maintenance, Road Commission, Sheriff’s Dept., Prosecutor’s office, Emergency Management, Motorpool, 9-1-1 Advisory Board, Juvenile Center, Western Michigan Legal Services, and Department of Human Services.
Personnel & Human Services - Corporate Counsel, Personnel (salaries, benefits, per diems, employee safety), Planning & GIS Mapping, Parks & Recreation, Public Health, Mental Health, Solid Waste Committee, Surveyor, Veterans, Area Agency on Aging, Register of Deeds, and Lakeshore Coordinating Council.
Finance - Financial Oversight, Purchasing, Insurance, Communications (Telephone, Information Systems and Mail), Printing and Microfilm, Clerk, Drains, Treasurer, Soil Erosion and Sedimentation, Building Authority, Economic Development and Loan Administration, MSU Cooperative Extension and Workforce Development.
