WHICH SCHOOLS IN BERRIEN COUNTY HAVE EARNED THEIR EARTH FLAG AWARD?

 

OOTrinity Lutheran School, Berrien SpringsOO  

Trinity Lutheran School received the Earth Flag Award in June 2009 during an all-school award assembly on the last day of school.  The school ramped up their recycling program and got all the students and teachers involved.  The Church members saw what they were doing and requested a couple recycling bins for the Church building, as well.  The students, staff, and parents worked rally hard and significantly reduced their paper usage and waste this school year. 

 

OOChikaming Elementary School, SawyerOO  

Chikaming Elementary School received the Earth Flag Award in May 2009.  The entire school recycles paper, and each grade level works on unique waste reduce or reuse projects.  The students and staff held a flag raising ceremony outside of their school to celebrate all their hard work.

 OOThree Oaks Elementary School, Three OaksOO  

Three Oaks Elementary School received the Earth Flag Award in May 2009.  The entire school recycles paper, and each grade level works on unique waste reduce or reuse projects.  The students and staff held a flag raising ceremony outside of their school to celebrate all their hard work.

 

 OOHollywood Elementary School in StevensvilleOO

Hollywood Elementary School earned the Earth Flag Award in April 2008.  The students and staff at Hollywood have done a tremendous job of reducing waste, reusing whatever they can, recycling paper and other items, buying recycled when possible, and school-wide education about recycling and the environment!

How to earn the Earth Flag Award: Contact Berrien County Resource Recovery and ask for an Earth Flag Award application.  If your school already qualifies for the award, just fill out the application and send it in.  You will also receive an Earth Flag folder containing ideas for school activities and recycling tips that may help your school meet the Earth Flag Award criteria.

Earth Flag Award criteria:

1. REDUCE: participate in at least 1 school-wide waste reduction activity.

2. REUSE: participate in at least 1 school-wide waste reuse activity.

3. RECYCLE: collect and recycle school waste paper (at a minimum) & establish commitment for a continuing recycling program.

4. REBUY: utilize classroom equipment, school supplies, and/or building material(s) that are made from recycled material.

5. EDUCATION: incorporate the 4R’s in school lessons.

The Environmental Specialist is available for technical assistance when applying and implementing any 4R activity.
