  • Extend the life of your tires: keep them inflated to the proper level, avoid squeeling tires, drive the speed limit, and keep tires properly balanced and rotated. Consult the owners manual.

  • When it’s time to replace tires, consider purchasing retreaded tires. This will increase the market for the reuse of tires and help limit the number of tires needing disposal.

- Tire piles may hold water and become mosquito breeding grounds. Tire piles can also be a fire hazard because once ignited, they burn uncontrollably at very hot temperatures and produce black smoke and hazardous, oily residue.

- The companies listed above collect tires from the public, but this is not the final step in disposal. Used tires can be retread, burned as fuel, or ground up into crumb rubber and used in place of asphalt. The fees collected by retailers are used to pay for recycling or proper disposal.
